With 4 kids you are going to need a new washer no matter what happens with the teacher's contracts but I can understand not wanting to purchase a large item when your financial future is somewhat uncertain. I would consider some of the many 0% interest offers if paid off within a certain time frame offers from places like Best Buy, Sears, Home Depot, etc. As long as you are prudent in paying off the balance before the date when interest will start to accrue it can be to your advantage. If say, for instance, the offer is 18 months 0% interest just calculate the amount owed by the 18 months for your monthly payment. You seem to be on top of your budget, I am confident you could make it work for you.

Just my two cents...my mom has always bought used appliances (washer, dryer, dishwasher) from the classifieds and has had wonderful luck with them. I don't think she's ever paid more than $100 a piece and I know that every single time they've lasted at least 5 years, and some over 10. (And she's obsessed with laundering/dishwashing. Something's always running in her house.)

My washer is leaking. I am trying to make due. Hunting the local 'shopper' (free ads for cheap stuff paper). Try freecycle online too! I've already poured money into mine once on repairs. So I am going to try to find a working USED one for now. So frustrating. Especially when I am having furlough days from my state job. I will find a way though! Hang in there.

We had a broken washer too. I think we went a couple of weeks with it working off and on. Thankfully we figured out what was wrong with it and were able to create a work around. So I didn't end up buying a new one.
