Our carpets have needed cleaning for awhile now. In fact the upstairs had not been cleaned since we moved in. The downstairs was down 2 years ago. Except to pay someone to clean the carpets in the whole house was going to cost at least $200 – even with coupons and specials. So I just didn’t schedule it because we don’t have the money right now. Except I kept noticing how badly it needed cleaning.
Fast forward to a coffee date with Kevin on Saturday. I mentioned that we should rent one and he called to find out how much it would be. Between the rental and the shampoo it was about $45. We spent Sunday deep cleaning the upstairs in preparation. We took a trunk load of items to goodwill and throw away bag after bag of trash or unwanted toys (wow can these kids accumulate stuff!). It was hard – it took about 6 hours, but we got it done with the kids help. Sunday night Kevin rented the machine and shampooed the downstairs. Monday morning after everyone left I cleaned the upstairs.
By cleaning the carpets ourselves we saved $155! You will almost always save money by doing something yourself over hiring it out to be done. It isn’t always easy, but it will likely be cheaper.

I have two large area rugs because I have wood floors. I washed them in the basement, rinsed in the backyard and dried on the fence, on one of those 100 degreed day this past summer. It saved me a lot of dinero s.
Costco is selling Rug Doctors right now for $300. This might be an cheaper option in the long run for someone who cleans their carpets frequently due to kids, pets or preference.
