July's Grocery Expirement

Right now, I am tired of shopping the deals. So for July, I am trying something new. I am giving myself $75 a week and am going to shop at Wal-Mart only for exactly what I need for that week. This is lower than my regular budget, but we are trying to save money and use what is in the house. I won't really be stocking up on anything, unless maybe I have to buy 2 to get a coupon, then things might carry over from week to week. Of course I have already run into some problems.

1- I thought I had plenty of chicken, but turns out I am out. I looked at the chicken at Wal-Mart and it was expensive and didn't look that great. My grocery store had it on sale for $1.99 a pound (sold in 3 pound bags). I had a $5 store credit, as well as a $5 Discover card I won in a cereal box. So I did make a trip there yesterday and got 6 lbs of chicken for $2. Shouldn't have to go there again though.

2 - Some things that I have to buy are more expensive at Wal-Mart. Like hotdog buns. The cheap ones have milk in them, so I had to pay twice as much as at my regular grocery store. I guess I will just do it this month though.

This week I spent $71.39 at Wal-Mart and $2 at Giant Eagle. I bought the following. My inlaws were visiting for the weekend, so there were some special items.

watermelon
2 pints blueberries
cherry tomatoes
grape tomatoes
garlic
baby carrots
bananas
bell peppers
onions
2 beef hotdogs
turkey pepperoni
ham lunch meat
turkey lunch meat
soy sauce
worchestershire sauce
frozen peas
frozen corn
2 4 packs of yogurt
feta cheese
starbucks ice cream $.10!
baked beans
salad dressing
thyme
fruit fresh for canning
whole wheat flour
motrin
kid wipes
2 gallons of milk
generic crackers
3 pack of muffins
loaf of bread
2 packs of hotdog buns

and the 6 lbs of chicken at Giant Eagle.

I am anxious to see how I do shopping at only 1 store for the month. Does anyone else shop at just one store each week?

I shop at Wal-Mart almost exclusively. I very rarely find anything less expensive anywhere else. I am always amazed at the Safeway and King Sooper's ads, because usually their sale price is more than the regular price at Wal-Mart. Remember also that Wal-Mart will price match.

I shop at Winn-Dixie only, basically because another supermarket is over 20 miles away. My kids are too little to attempt to make that trek!

Winn-Dixie has a lot of buy one get one free sales, so I always have a few pieces of meat in the freezer. And I try to stock up when sale prices are good on my staple items.

I'll be interested to follow your experiment this month.

I am right there with you. I am tired of chasing deals and organizing coupons. I haven't stepped into CVS for about two weeks. I still have some Meijer catalinas that I'll use up but I think I'll shop at the grocery store beside our house for the rest of the month. It's small and only has meat, vegetables, and some baked goods. It does have a few other items but they're over priced. I'll be following your progress!

It doesn't really work for me to shop at just one store. There is no store in my area that consistently has good prices on a variety of items. I don't drive all over town to visit different stores, though. I wait until I'm already running an errand nearby. I may only visit each store once a month, when they have the best prices on the items I use.

I usually shop and one-two stores a week. I loathe Walmart, and usually go to Kroger because it is closest. I spend $75 per week for our family of 7.

I shop at Kroger every week. Sometimes if the deals are awesome at Target, Giant Eagle or Meijer I'll stop in there, but that's usually only once or twice a month at most.

Hi! I recently decided to get a handle on what we spend for groceries. I did an experiment in April where I planned all my menus and did 2 times monthly shopping. I did not look at what was on sale, and did most of my shopping at Wal-mart and Sams club. (Both are near by- and I am in ne ohio too, but not sure exactly where you are here-I am in elyria), so anyhow, first month was AMAZING amount of 700$ for my family of 6. WHOA, too much I decided. I tried harder in May and spent just shy of 600$. Not as much sams, and not as much walmart, did a few coupon runs to giant eagle and to cvs in june and spent just shy of 500. We ate out more often (just started to keep track of that too--amazed at how much money was going out the door!!) Really trying to be careful, but also not to go out of my way. I include pet food and household products in my grocery bill, but am thinking I need to rethink that. I want to do under 100$ each week for myself and hubby, plus 4 kids, 10 and under. I look forward to watching your experiment. :)
