Why homeschooling works for us.

We are getting ready to start our 3rd year of homeschooling. While it hasn't always been fun and games, it has always been worth it. I thought it would be appropriate to list why homeschooling works well for us.

  • We can adapt our schedule to Kevin's work schedule. He teaches in a different district than we live in and has a slightly different schedule. It is very nice to be able to have days off with him and plan our year around his schedule, instead of someone else dictating what we do.
  • I missed my oldest son when he went to school. Kindergarden wasn't so bad, because it was only 3 hours. 1st grade was rough on all of us. I missed him when he was gone. I have never been one of those parents that has a baby and immediately starts counting down the days until they start school. I just don't get the people that can't wait for their kids to be gone all day.
  • It is more convenient for us. We can come and go as we please and not be tied to when school starts or ends. I can make a doctor or dentist appointment for earlier in the day when it is not as busy. We can visit museums or the zoo (field trips) during the week when we can take our time and things aren't as busy.
  • My children can learn at their own pace. Just today my oldest son was saying how he always had to wait for the other kids in first grade and could never move on when he was ready.
  • We can learn about topics that interest us, not what is dictated by the school district.
  • I get to parent my children. When your children are away from their parents for the majority of their waking time, they are going to get their influence from their peers. They need to be influenced by their parents mostly.
  • I can teach my children about God and the Bible. That is not allowed in school.
  • We get to spend lots of quality of time together as a family. When Kevin gets home from work we can hang out and have fun. There is no homework to get done before dinner or bedtime.
  • We get to read a ton of great books. My kids have lots of time to read on their own and we have time to read aloud books as a family.
  • My children are not bullied by their peers while the school looks the other way.
  • We can play lots of games together, just enjoying each others company.

Which is what we are going to do right now. I am sure I could list more reasons why we love homeschooling, but right now we have games to play. Check out other great homeschooling posts here!

Thank you so much for posting this! I'm gathering materials and info to start home schooling and it's so great to read about someone else having the same logic about it in their house as we do in ours.
